I tried for years to keep this a secret.
But someone saw it… they ousted me, during my trip last week to Hardees.
Was working on some kitchen counters with a buddy, but took off that AM to grab us SOME kind of sustenance that would fall into the ‘breakfast’ category.
Hardee’s. Yeah. That’d do it.
Walked in (‘cause I prefer that vs. drive-thru’s). Saw a dad-son duo with the same plan.
It was sweet, because I thought back to those endearing memories of my dad taking me to Hardee’s for cinnamon raisin biscuits—the same era when Hardee’s was on that California Raisin craze.
(what ever happened to those California Raisins? Did they dry up? I should google “ca raisins where are they now”).
I let this duo ahead of lil’ ol’ indecisive me. It’s called strategy. I had no idea what I wanted and maybe I could piggyback on their choice while coming off benevolent. Win-win.
The son kept staring at me.
Probably would’ve made most uncomfortable or awkward.
I couldn’t take it. I had to break the ice. I can’t remember exactly what I said. “You a biscuit fan?” … “You and your pops getting some breakfast?” Probably something like that. I don’t know.
I just appreciated the new challenge: Break this guy’s stare with words I could think up in 3 seconds (and figure out what was going on in that noggin’ of his)
It worked. He said (get this), “You look like someone on TV.”
“Oh? … Oh right. I’ve heard this… David Spade?”
“Who?”
Argh! D’uh. This kid was like 17. He wouldn’t know who David Spade is.
He continued, “RJ. You know that Power Ranger?”
Wow.
It’s been … how many years?
I had kept it under wraps for ages.
But *this* kid, Corvin… He saw through my Clark-Kent-inspired disguise.
Of course, I told him I really was RJ. But I couldn’t say the Power Ranger catch phrase out loud because… I think all the other ‘Rangers would come out of nowhere, and make a robot dinosaur (or something like that?)
It’s time everyone knows I’ve lived a double-life. Many saw the day-to-day “Drew” however, behind the scenes, I’ve always been “RJ” … or the purple Power Ranger.
